Founded in 1904 by the Augustinians of the Assumption, Assumption College is one of the oldest Catholic colleges in New England. It is a coeducational, residential Catholic college that offers academically rigorous programs in liberal arts, sciences and professional studies.
Until the mid-1950s, the all-male enrollment was primarily Franco-American and the curriculum was bilingual. In 1950, Assumption College expanded its liberal arts offerings and received a new charter that authorized it to confer graduate degrees. The Graduate School was founded during this period and the Continuing Education program was launched in 1979.
By the end of the 1950s there were more lay professors than Assumptionists on the faculty. In 1968, the Assumptionists entrusted the school to a new board of trustees composed of both religious and lay people. In 1969, Assumption admitted its first coeducational class and welcomed its first lay president in 1972. Today, there are nearly 2,200 undergraduates and more than 800 graduate and continuing education students enrolled at the College. Undergraduate alumni numbers about 14,000, a constituency characterized by a high percentage of first-generation college-goers and modest giving potential.
The College is located in Worcester, MA – a city of 150,000 and the second largest city in New England. There are 11 other colleges and universities in and around the city.
Brakeley Briscoe conducted a pre-campaign planning and feasibility study, testing a goal of $40 million. A 12-person steering committee, which would meet 52 times during the campaign, was formed and led by David Grenon, an alumnus of Assumption Prep (which closed in 1970). A $3 million leadership gift was obtained early on, five times larger than any other commitment ever given to Assumption by a living individual.
When the campaign ended six years later, the $33.3 million raised helped build the Testa Science Center and a new multi-sport stadium, increased endowment by $10 million, and raised the annual fund to unprecedented levels. Most importantly, it transformed an institution with an inferiority complex into one proud of what it accomplished, confident in its future.
Brakeley Briscoe provided strategic consulting two days a month for the first three years then reduced that role gradually to the end of the campaign. Afterwards, Brakeley Briscoe conducted a post-campaign assessment that looked at the lessons learned from the campaign and how Assumption should address its ongoing needs. Brakeley Briscoe continues to consult periodically with Vice President Tom Ryan as the colleges new president contemplates another campaign.
The VPIA had this to say about Brakeley Briscoe: “We selected Brakeley Briscoe because of their extensive experience with colleges like ours and because we thought we’d get an approach tailored to our needs. That expectation certainly came true. They gave us a very thoughtful and realistic pre-campaign study report, helped us enlist our volunteer leadership, and coached us into asking for what turned out to be the largest gift from a living individual in our history.”

Christopher Newport University is a public, four-year university with 5,000 students that only a generation or so ago was a struggling, 500-student, two-year college attached to the nearby College of William & Mary. The long-time President, former US Congressman Paul Trible, has transformed the institution in a very short period of time into a full-fledged, selective university. The campus is breath-takingly spectacular, thanks to his clout in Richmond but not much thanks to a fundraising program that had never gotten much beyond his personal vision, charm and connections. Enter Adelia Thompson as the Vice President for University Advancement. Adelia was formerly the chief advancement officer at Birmingham-Southern College, the Centers for Disease Control Foundation, and Agnes Scott College, working with BBI at all of them.
CNU had never had a comprehensive campaign, its annual fund was very modest, and the older the alumnus the more distant he or she was because “that’s not the school I attended.” The early thinking was maybe a $35 million campaign, given that they had a $5 million lead gift in hand, plus outstanding leadership – a first-rate campaign chairman (former co-chairman of Virginia Tech’s $1.5 billion campaign), a president for whom the campaign was a personal crusade, Adelia Thompson and a very good staff, and the campaign planning committee (some 25+ members).BBI’s early work focused on campaign planning, most notably including a “hybrid” assessment of the marketplace that comprised 23 traditional feasibility study interviews done by BBI, 19 other interviews done by senior Advancement staff, three Presidential dinners in non-local venues, and 15 focus group-like “conversations” with various affinity groups on and off campus (two conducted by BBI). In all, more than 300 persons participated in the exercise. BBI was asked to write the report on all of these activities.
While President Trible was anxious to move on with the campaign forthwith, he came to understand that, quite aside from the goal issue, the cultivational/educational/motivational benefits would prove to be well worth the considerable effort in and expense of the planning process.
The assessment tested a goal of $40 million, which would be a huge achievement for CNU. The campaign time frame would be six years. The BBI report recommended a $35 million working goal, which the Board of Visitors enthusiastically endorsed, as well as the very comprehensive campaign plan that the staff and BBI prepared even as the study was proceeding.
One of the phenomena of the campaign was that CNU kept pulling rabbits out of hats. To mix metaphors, the low-hanging fruit just kept coming, thanks largely to truly outstanding leadership, the ingredient that makes or breaks most campaigns. About President Trible who almost single-handedly had created today’s CNU, it was said, “You have dinner at his house and you’re toast.” At the end of 2012, the campaign already stood at $15.3 million, 44% of the then-goal. Still in the wings were negotiations with two companies headquartered locally – the Ferguson Company (the nation’s largest plumbing supply company) and Smithfield Foods. In due course together they accounted for $12 million in campaign credits.
The campaign went public at the end of February, 2014, with $28.4 million in hand, including $1 million from Chairman John Lawson, which was announced that same day. The announcement was more of a PR blitz than anything else, the campaign having hardly been much of a secret around town. The focus now would be on broadening the base of the campaign regionally, with affinity groups, and with sub-committees dedicated to specific funding needs, with the Executive Council playing a major role.

King’s College is a liberal arts Catholic college on a small urban campus in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. More than 95 percent of students receive institutional financial aid and 40 percent are first generation college attendees from modest socio-economic circumstances, a demographic that hasn’t changed much since its founding in 1946.
The college retained Brakeley Briscoe to conduct a campaign planning study. A previous campaign for $22 million was completed successfully, but many facilities and endowment needs remained unfunded. The new president, Rev. Thomas J. O’Hara (’71), was the first alumnus to head the College. O’Hara knew investing in the College’s facilities, grounds and endowment was critical to the college’s future. In addition, King’s knew the college needed to take an active part in rebuilding downtown Wilkes-Barre.
Brakeley Briscoe conducted its campaign planning study during considerable economic uncertainty. Brakeley Briscoe recommended a silent-phase campaign with a working goal of $25 million. King’s took advantage of the slow economic times to do much-needed behind the scenes planning and preparation. There was a staff reorganization to support a donor-centered campaign. Leadership needed to be enlisted and the key needs for the Legacy of Excellence Campaign needed to be finalized. Alumni prospect identification was a top priority as well. A trustee-based campaign leadership group headed by John O’Brien (’64) assisted O’Hara from the start and was of great value throughout the five-year campaign period.
The board of trustees stepped up early and often throughout the campaign. They committed a record-breaking $15.2 million with 100 percent participation. This became a catalyst for increased and new gifts. King’s celebrated its Legacy of Excellence campaign’s success. The campaign raised $38 million, 73 percent more than the previous campaign and 52 percent over the working goal set.
The fact that Kings did not sit back and wait until the economy improved placed the college far ahead of other campaigns in the region. They took the time to prepare, resulting in unprecedented increased and new gifts, including an $8 million unrestricted commitment from an anonymous donor.
Brakeley Briscoe has served King’s College in numerous strategic consulting and direct service capacities during our five-year relationship. King’s proved that planning a transformational campaign is worth the time, discipline, focus and patience. This holds true even when the economic environment would suggest that it is better to wait rather than proceed.

Keuka College is a private liberal arts college of almost 1,000 students located in the Finger Lakes region of New York. A women’s college until the mid-1980s, Keuka is noted for its education and occupational therapy programs, and its Field Program is a national leader in experiential education. Keuka has also partnered with four Chinese universities on mainland China, where more than 4,500 Chinese students are enrolled in Keuka degree programs.
Brakeley Briscoe began as Keuka’s consultant in 1995 with a pre-campaign planning and feasibility study testing $30 million goal. Brakeley Briscoe recommended a $25 million goal and provided strategic campaign consulting working closely with volunteers and staff. Keuka experienced various crises involving enrollment, financial aid, the departure of a revered president and a veteran vice president for development, economic downturns and more. BBI conducted the executive search for the new vice president of development, Carolanne Marquis, who completed the campaign with a flourish (and has since been promoted to COO/executive vice president). Despite the numerous setbacks, the campaign concluded at $25.6 million, with another $7 million in testamentary commitments.
For all of its success, however, the campaign had not met the College’s largest single need: the restoration of Ball Hall, the grande dame of the campus and symbolic heart of the alumni. Brakeley Briscoe conducted a second study and a $10 million campaign was launched with Brakeley Briscoe providing strategic consulting throughout. Largely staff-driven, the campaign concluded with $10.5 million, a full year ahead of schedule.
Then at Keuka’s request we conducted a search for the position of Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving and the College hired one of our recommended candidates and contracted with us to provide training and mentoring to the new staffer for the first several months.
During the 13-year relationship with Keuka College, Brakeley Briscoe has conducted two studies, counseled two campaigns, conducted two executive searches and provided between- and post-campaign strategic counseling as well as counseling and mentoring.

Located in Bristol, Rhode Island, the Herreshoff Marine Museum presents the story of the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, which produced some of the world’s finest yachts and the U. S. Navy’s first torpedo boats. It also houses the America’s Cup Hall of Fame, which traces yacht design and construction and Cup competitions. The Museum includes the Hall of Boats, the Herreshoff Model Collection and a number of restored and working boats. The Hall of Fame focuses on the inductees and their accomplishments, performance and sportsmanship.
The Museum retained Brakeley Briscoe to conduct a pre-campaign planning and feasibility study to renovate and expand the campus. However, it quickly became apparent the assignment was more of a management consulting challenge than anything else. The Museum was headed for a financial crisis and lacked a coherent strategy for changing directions.
As a result of Brakeley Briscoe’s analytical work and recommendations, major changes were instituted with respect to the leadership and role of the Board of Trustees as well as staff alignments and responsibilities.
Board Chair Marshall Lawson summarized the relationship with Brakeley Briscoe: “Brakeley Briscoe’s nominal assignment was to address our fundraising challenges, but through the process of assessing our internal readiness, George Brakeley discerned early on that our issues had more to do with strategic, managerial and operational concerns. The fact was we were at a critical juncture in the life of the Museum. His analysis and recommendations encouraged us to embark on the right course.”

Norwalk Community College Foundation (NCCF) is a nonprofit organization that supports the needs of Norwalk Community College (NCC) in Norwalk, CT. NCC is a leader and partner in the academic, economic and cultural life of southwest Fairfield County, providing comprehensive, accessible, innovative and affordable education to a diverse population. The Foundation serves the college through scholarships, raising awareness, and providing stewardship for annual and capital campaigns on behalf of NCC.
NCCF hired Brakeley Briscoe to counsel the development office as it prepared for a proposed $15 million campaign to purchase equipment, machinery, and other interior and exterior needs for a new building that was recently built to address, in part, the nursing crisis in the region and the need for more healthcare professionals. After completing the study Brakeley Briscoe assisted with on-site counsel at the Foundation and further strategic counsel throughout our three-year relationship with the community college.
NCC surpassed the $15 million goal before even publicly announcing the official campaign and goal.

Carolinas HealthCare Foundation, now Atrium Health Foundation, in Charlotte, NC, is the fundraising arm of the Carolinas HealthCare System, now Atrium Health. The Foundation began considering a capital campaign in 2001 to build the region’s first children’s hospital, comprising 234 beds, to complement the 861-bed flagship medical center. Although the Foundation had been successful in attracting philanthropic support (it raised as much as $10 million annually) it had never undertaken a capital campaign since its founding in 1959.
Brakeley Briscoe worked with Foundation’s President Michael L. Rose and his management team to develop a campaign strategy to maximize their potential. After more than a year of strategic planning, the focus of the campaign emerged.
Brakeley Briscoe found strong support for the Foundation’s plans and a readiness by the community leadership to embrace the children’s hospital concept. In addition Brakeley Briscoe identified campaign leadership and key donor prospects. Bolstered by the report’s findings, the Foundation set a goal of $60 million in philanthropic support to complete the financing of the $85 million facility.
The campaign, titled “Dare to Dream”, began in 2004 with a $10 million gift from Leon Levine Hospital Foundation in Charlotte. The campaign chair Howard C. “Smoky” Bissell personally solicited all top donors. Brakeley Briscoe continued to serve as counsel after the planning study.
By 2006 the campaign reached 95 percent of its goal and campaign leadership was preparing for the final public phase of the effort later in the year. By the end of 2007 the foundation had surpassed the $60 million goal by $5 million. In 2008 we conducted a post-campaign assessment to help document all the good things which had been done to make the campaign a success and to probe about what might have been improved. Since then we continue to provide periodic counsel to the staff.
